Rita Moreno is born Rosa Dolores Alverio Marcano was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico. Her mother was Rosa Maria, and her father was Francisco Jose Alverio. Rita’s mother was a seamstress, and the father was a farmer. At a tender age, Rita’s mother moved to New York City, taking her along with her but left her younger brother Francisco behind. Rita adopted the surname of her stepfather, Edward Moreno hence the name Moreno. She lived in the villages of Valley Stream, New York, on Long Island during her teens.

Rita had a relationship with actor Marlon Brando. The relationship didn’t last long due to his infidelity. Rita began her career when she was 11 years old by voicing the translation of American movies to Spanish. Her first Broadway role in Skydrift caught the attention of talent scouts when she was thirteen years old. In 1961 she landed a role in the Broadway musical West Side Story. Rita had a major role in the 1961 film Summer and Smoke.
