Hatton had a short amateur career, where he won 7 British titles and represented his country at the 1996 AIBA youth world championship, he was eliminated in the semi-finals which caused controversy, a judge was found to have accepted a bribe. From there, Hatton turned professional at the age of 18.

Hatton made his professional debut on September 11, 1997, against Colin McAuley, and he won by a TKO in the first round during his second fight in New York as part of the undercard to Naseem Hamed vs. Kevin Kelley. Soon he fought on the undercard of contestants involving major British boxers. In 1999, he was named young boxer of the year by the British Boxing Writers club.

He received his first international title in May 1999 when he defeated Dillon Carew for the WBO international light-welterweight title.
