Pitino was born in New York City, New York, but raised in Bayville, New York. He went to St. Dominic High School, where he took the captainship of the school. After graduation, he would later enroll at the University of Massachusetts, where he became a point guard for the Minutemen basketball team. At UMass, he helped the team as a junior and as a senior before graduating in 1974.
