Derringer was born in Celina, Ohio, and was brought up in Fort Recovery. He is the son of Janice Lavine and John Otto Zehringer, who was a section foreman on the Nickel Plate Railroad. Besides his parents, his first significant influence was his uncle, Jim Thornburg, a famous guitarist and singer in Ohio.

After the eighth grade, their family moved to Union City, Indiana, where he started a band called The McCoys. Later, Rick changed the name to Rick Z Combo, Rick, and finally Raiders before going back to the band’s original name.

Derringer joined Johnny Winter in a band that they called “Johnny Winter And,” the “And,” referring to The McCoys in the early 70s.

In 1984, he played the guitar on Barbra Streisand’s cover version of Steinman’s “Left in the Dark.” This song was released as the lead single of Emotion.

In 1985, due to their friendship with Cyndi Lauper and Steinman, they collaborated again to release the Wrestling Album for the World Wrestling Federation. The album consisted mostly of wrestlers’ theme songs. Additionally, he returned to the World Wrestling Federation and produced its second music album, Piledriver.
