Richard Garriott, whose full name is Richard Allen Garriott, was born on the 4^th of July 1961 in Cambridge, England, to parents, Helen Mary Garriott and Owen Garriott.  His father used to work at NASA as a scientist and an astronaut. His father was one of the NASA’s first scientist-astronauts to flew to Skylab 3 and Space Shuttle mission STS-9.

Richard Garriott began writing computer games in 1974. In 1979, he began working at a computer store, where he saw computers manufactured by Apple, and he began to add perspective views to his games. One of his copy made it to California Pacific, who signed a deal with him following which the game sold upwards of 30,000 copies, and he made $5 for each game sold.

In 1997, he coined the term, massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). He left Electronic Arts to form Destination Games in April of 2000 with his brother Robert and Starr Long. His game “Tabula Rosa,” which was published by NCsoft, had a seven-year development period but wasn’t greatly successful during its initial release. He left NCsoft in November of 2008, and in July of 2010, he was awarded $28 million in his lawsuit against NCsoft, stating that the company did not appropriately handle his departure in 2008. In 2009, he founded the company “Portalarium.”
