Richard Benjamin Harrison was born in a very poor family on March 4, 1941. When he turned one, they switched to Lexington, North Carolina. He went to Lexington High School, Lexington, North Carolina. When he was in his junior year, he had to ditch his studies as they were financially weak and his parents were unable to pay his school fee, and hence when he turned 14, he started driving a school bus for which he was getting paid approx six to seven dollars a week.
He had to park the school bus in the backyard of his house and had to get up early in the morning to pick up the school kids and drop them off to their schools. During a barn dance, he saw Joanne Rhue and fell in love with her. Joanne Rhue was currently his wife, and it had been around 58 years since they got married.
