Being born in the town of Cincinnati, Ohio, he did his primary schooling from Cincinnati itself; he went to William Henry Harrison High school for his high education. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Cincinnati. He also taught Oak Hills High School in Ohio before moving to the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). He was also given a nickname “Ace” as a result of resemblance to Jim Carry and his character Ace Ventura.

Career
Before being a professional fighter in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Rich used to be a Mathematics teacher at the Oak Hills High School in Ohio.
Rich’s UFC career was a perfect 3-0 start, including a win over UFC veteran Evan Tanner. He fought in the main event of “The Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale” on 5th April 2005, it was the first live UFC card on free cable TV. He faced the former champion of UFC Ken Shamrock in that fight and won the battle over Technical Knock Out. This win gave Rich UFC stardom and a chance to fight for the UFC title.
On 5th June 2005, Rich defeated Evan Tanner for the second time in UFC, which gave him the UFC middleweight championship title. On 19th November 2005, Franklin defended the title against Nate Quarry. During UFC 56 on 4th March 2006, Rich again defended the title in a fight against David Loiseau. Rich broke his left hand during the match, which kept him away from the action for the next six months.
Rich lost his title on 14th October 2006 to Anderson Silva, who won the fight on technical knock out. Then franklin returned to the Light Heavyweight and signed a six-fight contract with UFC.
Rich returned to middleweight again in November 2012. There he lost the fight against Cung Le.
In September 2015, Franklin announced his retirement from the competitive fighting. He was included in the UFC Hall of fame in 2019.
