Reverend William Barber II, whose full name is William J. Barber II, was born on the 30th of August 1963 in Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S. to parents, William J. Barber Sr. and Eleanor Barber. The family moved to Washington County, North Carolina, to participate in the desegregation of the public school system where his mother worked as a secretary and an office manager while his father worked as a physics teacher.
At the age of 15 years old, he was elected as the president of the local NAACP youth council in 1978. Two years later, he became the student body president of his high school. He then went to North Carolina Central University (NCCU), where he became the student government president at the age of 19. He received his bachelor’s degree in Political science from NCCU. He has received a Master of Divinity degree from Duke University and also a doctorate from the same university with a concentration in public policy and pastoral care.
