Raymond Kurzweil was born on February 12, 1948, in New York City, New York, the U.S, to secular Jewish parents. He completed his schooling from the NYC Public Education Kingsbury Elementary School.
At the age of five, Kurzweil decided that he wanted to be an inventor and was an avid reader of science fiction literature. As a child, he created several toys and electronic gadgets, including a robotic puppet theater and robotic game. Ray Kurzweil built a program named the Select College Consulting Program, during his sophomore year at MIT. The software compared thousands of data of different students to match high school students with colleges. Later, he sold the program to the American publishing firm “Harcourt, Brace & World” for $100,00.
In 1974, Kurzweil founded the company Kurzweil Computer Products, Inc. and developed the first optical character recognition program that could recognize text written in any standard font.
