The legendary musician was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and his parents Herman Meisner (1911-1995) and Emilie Meisner (1911-2010) gave him the name Randall Herman Meisner. His parents were farmers, and Randall was had one elder sister named Carol Meisner, who passed away in 2005. His father was a violin teacher, and he once stated that his mother was always singing around the house.

He developed an interest in the guitar when he was only ten years old after watching a show by Elvis Presley. He started taking guitar lessons and also started playing in local bands. His teacher at Scottsbluff High School suggested that he practice playing bass, and after trying it, he realized it came naturally.

Randy married his high school sweetheart by the name of Jennifer Lee Barton in 1963. They welcomed their firstborn child Dana Scott the same year, and in 1970 they were blessed with twins Eric Shane and Heather Leigh. They started differences in their marriage, and they divorced in 1981.

In 1996 he married his girlfriend for 12 years, Lana Rae. They did not get any children, and Lana died in 2016. The death of his wife was mysterious as on the police had received a call of an intoxicated male suspect from the couple’s house, and they went to the house. Ninety minutes after leaving the house, Lana accidentally shot herself with a rifle.
