Randall Duane Couture on June 22, 1963, in Everett, Washington, to Sharan Amelia and Edward Lewis “Ed” Couture. Couture went to Alderwood Middle School in Lynnwood, Washington. During his final year in wrestling in Lynnwood High School, Couture won the State Championship title. Later he joined the United States Army, where he served his country for six long years from 1982 to 88.

In the 101st Airborne, he was given a military rank of Sergeant, where he wrestled. While he had his career in the US army, Couture decided to apply for the U.S. Army Freestyle Wrestling team, but due to some error, his application was sent to Greco-Roman tryouts where he became the Greco-Roman wrestler. Couture nominated for Olympic team alternate thrice; at the 2000 Olympic Trials, he made it to the semifinals and NCAA Division I runner-up twice.
