Inception
The band was formed in 1965 in London by a group of four students. They were; Syd Barrett (guitar and lead vocals), Nick Mason (drums), Roger Waters (bass guitar and vocals), and Richard Wright (keyboards and vocals). The band began under the leadership of their lead vocalist, Syd Barrett. David Gilmour (guitar and vocalist) joined the band in 1967. Under Barrett’s leadership, the band released its first album in 1967, and it was very successful.
Despite their early success after releasing their first album, Barrett left the band in April 1968 due to deteriorating mental issues. After this, Roger Waters became their lead vocalist and thematic leader. The band then went on ahead to release several albums, which were a huge success.
In 1968, the band released their second album, which was included in Barrett’s final contribution to their discography. After the exit of Barrett, Waters began to develop his own songwriting. He wrote songs such as “See-Saw” and “Remember a Day.” They were encouraged to produce their own music and record demos. However, the band did go through a slightly rough patch after the departure of Barrett.
On one occasion, Mason had struggled to perform his drum part on “Remember a day.” This led to some measures to be taken; Norman Smith entered as his replacement. Smith’s time in the band was as easy as they thought it would be, he had a very bad attitude which seemed to anger the band. Waters and Mason could not read music and therefore had to invent their own system of notation, which Gilmour described to like an architectural diagram.
The band has been creating music for so many years and has been very successful at doing it. The band is famous for releasing songs that are concept songs. All the albums released by the band were based on a theme that the band deemed fit. Despite losing some of the members along the way, the band went ahead to produce music until 2014. The band released their last album in November 2014. Their last performance together was in 2005 in the Live eight concerts for charity.
