Phil Lesh was born in the city of Berkeley in California. He started his music career as a violinist. He got into Berkeley High School for completing his schooling career. He, in his high school, switched to trumpet and participated in all the music competitions that were held at his school. He, after completing his school life, went on to attend  San Francisco State University. He was unable to achieve the position he wanted to be in the university band.
