Early Life
Phil Hampson knight was born on 24th February 1938 to William Knight and Lota Hartfield knight, in East Moreland locality of Portland, Oregon. His father worked as a newspaper publisher.
His early schooling was completed at Cleveland high school. He wanted to work at his father’s newspaper, but his father wanted him to find work on his own, so he started working for the Oregonian newspaper. For higher studies, he went to the University of Oregon in Eugene and pursued journalism working as a sports reporter and earned his degree in 1959.

Immediately after his graduation from Oregon University, he joined the army and served actively for one year and seven years in army reserves. In 1964 January 25th he ended starting up the blue-ribbon company with Bowerman, who provided product design ideas, the company namely Blue-Ribbon Sports(BRS), which later transformed into Nike. His first sales were made by Plymouth Valiant automobiles. These sales provided him with full-time work at BRS. In the year 1978, he was suggested to change the name from BRS to Nike, and thus Nike was formed.
In 1998, Knight bought a few percents of the shares of Vinton Studios, later he purchased Will Vinton Studios and was controlled by Nike. Later in 2003, he appointed his son, Travis Knight as a board member and then CEO and President of the studios which were renamed as “Laika”.
On November 18, 2004, Knight resigned from the post of CEO of Nike, several months after his son’s death, Matthew Knight. Though he maintained his position of board’s chairman. William Perez replaced him as the CEO of Nike, later replaced by Mark Parker.
He donated $105 million to the Stanford Graduate School of Business In the year 2006, which later got the name “The Knight Management Center”.
