Petula Clark, whose birth name is Sally Olwen Clark, was born on the 15th of November 1932 to parents, Doris and Leslie Noah Clark, in Epsom, Surrey, England. Both of her parents worked as nurses at the Long Grove Hospital. It was her father who gave her the stage name, Petula. At the time of World War II, she lived with her grandparents and her sister, Barbara Clark. She showed an interest in music at an early age and began to sing in the chapel choir.

Petula Clark married Claude Wolff in 1961 and has been together ever since.  Together, they have a son named Patrick Wolff and two daughters, Katherine Natalie Wolff and Barbara Michelle Wolff. She has previously been in a relationship with Joe Henderson.

The 9-year old Petula Clark made her radio debut in 1942 while attending a BBC broadcast with her father. There, she volunteered a rendering of “Mighty Lak’ a Rose,” which garnered an amazing response, which in turn led to 500 more appearances by her in different programs.  Apart from her radio work, she toured the UK with fellow child performer, Julie Andrews.

She has also performed for popular political figures like George VI and Winston Churchill. In 1944, she was performing at London’s s Royal Albert Hall in 1944, where she caught the attention of the popular film director, Maurice Elvey. As a result, she was cast in the 1944 war drama film, “Medal for the General,” at the age of 12.  She then worked in several films including, “Here Come the Huggetts” (1948), “Vote for Huggett” (1949), and “The Huggetts Abroad” (1949).

She made her TV debut in 1946 with an appearance on the TV show, “Cabaret Cartoons.” This led her to be signed to host her series named “Petula Clark.” She began her singing career in 1949 with the release “Put Your Shoes On, Lucy.” In the 1950s, she had several hits including, “Majorca” (1955) and “With All My Heart” (1956), and “The Little Shoemaker” (1954), which was an international and even reached the number 1 position in Australian charts.

In 1961, she released the songs, “Sailor,” “Romeo,” and “My Friend the Sea,” which attracted great success. “Sailor” reached the top of the UK charts while “Romeo” became a part of the Top 10 charts, sold over one million copies globally, and earned her first gold disc, which was awarded to her by the RIAA.

In 1964, her song, “Downtown,” became a major international success and reached the number 1 position on the American charts in January 1965 and sold 3 million copies in the U.S. alone. The song was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004. This was number followed by several hits in the following years including, “My Love” (1965), “A Sign of the Times” (1966), and “This Is My Song” (1967).

In 1968, she starred in the musical film, “Finian’s Rainbow” and received critical acclaim for her performance, besides getting nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. In the 1970s, she released singles like Melody Man” (1970), “The Song of My Life” (1971), and “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” (1972).

In 1980, she performed in her last film, which was “Never Never Land.” Her last performance as a TV actor came in the 1981 French mini-series “Sans Famille.”In 1988, she released the remix of “Downtown” named “Downtown ’88,” which reached the Top 10 of the UK charts. Her most recent work was the 2018 album, “Vu d’ici.”
