He was born in Montreal to parents Henry and Muriel. He grew up with three other siblings- sister, Michaela, and brothers, Sonny and Larry. He went to Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School. He joined the first batch of Theatre Students in Canada and graduated from the National Theatre School of Canada in 1963 as the first batch of Theatre artists with a formal degree.
