Early Life

Pentatonix started with three members namely Kristine “Kristie”, Maldonado, Mitchell “Mitch”, Grassi and Scott Hoying. The trio grew up together and also went to Martin High School in Arlington, Texas. Kristie was born on 16th May 1992 whereas Mitch was born in 1992 on 24th July. Hoying and Maldonado joined the University of Southern California and the University of Oklahoma, respectively. Maldonado pursued a Musical Theatre major and Hoying decided to pursue a bachelor degree in popular music.

During his days in college, Hoying became a member of SoCal VoCals which is a Capella group. One of the members called Bram told him about The Sing-Off. After Hoying persuaded Mitch Grassi and Kristie Maldonado, Beam gave an opinion that they needed a bass and a beatboxer too for support.

For the vocal bass, he discovered Aviel Avi Kaplan through a mutual friend. Avi was born in 1989 on 17th April. Later via YouTube, they met a young man who was good at playing the cello and beatboxing as his video had gone viral. His name was Kelvin Olusalo.
