Patrick Michael Byrne was born on the 29th of November, 1962 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA. He was brought up in Woodstock, Vermont and Hanover, New Hampshire. His father, John J. Byrne, was a former chairman of GEICO insurance and White Mountains Insurance. These were subsidiaries of Berkshire Hathaway, which made him really good friends with Warren Buffett.

In 2002, Byrne initiated an IPO of Overstock using the ‘Dutch Auction’ method. This was one of the first companies to use this method which allowed them to retain greater share of capital within the company.

Over time, Byrne became obsessed with short sellers and led a stellar campaign from 2005 against the short sellers. However, some of his employees thought that it distracted him from Overstock’s main business. His tenure at Overstock was plagued with a series of ambitious projects that were never completed.

In 2013, he began investing in cryptocurrency and blockchain, and became the first major retailer to accept Bitcoin as a form of payment. Byrne became to fixated on the technology aspect of the company that led them to making some big losses; like losing $316 Million over a period of two years.

Back to Byrne’s fight against short sellers, he said on a conference call with analysts that there are individuals that were determined to drop their stock price down to $6 – $10.
