Orrin Grant Hatch was born on 22 March 1934 and was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His parents are Jesse Hatch and Helen Frances Hatch. His father was a metal lather. Orrin Hatch had eight brothers and sisters, two of them died as infants. Hatch was very much affected by the loss of one of his older brothers Jesse, in 1945.

Growing up, Hatch was very poor and was the first member of his family who attends college, which was Brigham Young University. He received a B.A. degree in History. He is also an amateur boxer. In 1962, Hatch received a J.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. They also have 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He studied at Brigham Young University and the University of Pittsburgh.
