His father was an Ashkenazi Jew, who left Ukraine and settled down in the United States of America and was a professor at Gratz College, a college in Philadelphia. However, he was brought back into the academic line after talking to Zellig Harris, a Russian linguist. Chomsky majored in theoretical linguistics. He completed his doctoral dissertation from Harvard University.
