After finishing high school in 1980, he enrolled in the University of Maine, where he had been a defensive player for the sports team, and completed his graduation in 1984 with a degree in marketing.
He claimed that he faked his way through for a 2.3-grade average yet chose this period as ‘the happiest years of his life. He became a member of the fraternity whose name was Sigma Nu. His brother also went to the institution and worked as a play-by-play announcer for the Maine Black Bears Ice hockey team alongside the American Sportscaster named Gary Thorne.
