Mendel’s birth took place in Richland, a mid-sized city in the Southeast of Washington. Nate Mendel completed his education at Hanford High School. In his growing years, he has been practicing the violin. When Mendel was 13, his interest in rock band gained him so much enthusiasm that he joined the rock band.
He was accompanied by his friend, who suggested he play guitar. He had been striking notes and learning guitar all by himself since his age of 20. He worked as a bassist in many local bands as well. Instead of hitting notes on basic knowledge, he aimed to strike the notes as fast as possible.

Mendel started his career with a hardcore metal band, Diddly Squat. The band recorded 7″ single. Mendel accompanied their summer national tour in 1988 summer vacation. After this, he shifted to Seattle, where he joined on some straight edge band called Brotherhood. Mendel spent four months with them.
Later he joined for the band—Christ on a Crutch. In 1992, Mendel formed his band ” Sunny Day Real Estate” with the help of Dan Hoerner and William Goldsmith. Mendel confessed he wants to add some interesting and rhythmic patterns to music, which being the reason behind SDRE. Mendel was also invited by the Foo Fighters band in 1995. Hence, Mendel is also counted as one of those original and lively band members of Foo Fighters along with Grohl and Pat Smear.
Being closely associated with Foo Fighters, he had been neglecting SDRE unknowingly for a couple of days. He was replaced by Jeff Palmer. They released a self-titled album in 2003 with Goldsmith. In 2003, Mendel collaborated with Juno. SDRE also reunited for two of its albums, which include ‘How it feels to be Something On’ and ‘The Rising Tide.’
