Monta Ellis was born on the 26th of October, 1985 in Jackson, Mississippi. He is the child of Marcella Singleton and Rosa Ellis. He also has an older brother called Antwain Ellis who he admired when growing up for his basketball skills.
Ellis went to Lanier High School in his hometown of Jackson, Mississippi where he played basketball. In the 2004-05 season of high school basketball, he led his high school to its 2nd state crown in four years. In a game against Greenwood, Ellis scored a total of 72 points, which placed him tied for 2nd for the all-time scoring state charts.

On joining the 2005 NBA draft, Monta ended up being the 40th overall pick by the Golden State Warriors. As a rookie, Monta didn’t get a lot of playing time, he had 46 games with 3 starts and only averaged 18.1 minutes a game.
The 2006-07 season was much better for Monta, where he helped the Golden State Warriors to return to the playoffs after taking a break for 12 good years. He increased his scoring by 9.7 points from the previous season which was the largest increase in the NBA.
In the season, he scored a season-high of 31 points three times and a career-high of 13 assists against the Los Angeles Clippers.
