On 3rd May 1965, Tamara Prokhorov and Dmitri Prokhorov were blessed with their son, who they named Mikhail Dmitrievitch Prokhorov. Mikhail was born as the younger son of his parents, having an elder sister named Irina Prokhorov.

His father was a trained lawyer who handled international relations for the Soviet Committee of Physical Culture and Sports, while his wife Tamara Prokhorov worked at the Institute for Chemical Machine-Building as a chemical engineer.

Mikhail graduated in 1989 from the Moscow Finance Institute and later worked at the International Bank for Economic Corporation in a management position with respect to his education. Not long after, he was briefly the head of the management board of MFK bank.
