Michael Garret Shanks was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. He grew up in Kamloops, British Columbia. He participated in the BFA acting program for 4 years and later on made several appearances in stage productions where he served a duration of 2 years apprenticeship with the prestigious Stratford Festival in Ontario.
During this period he managed to appear on TV Series like Highlander and University Hospital as a guest and also in A Family Divided a television movie and finally a small role in The Call of The Wild. He won the role of Daniel Jackson on Stargate SG-1.

They have blessed with two children together with a son, Samuel, and a daughter Mia Shanks.
He has a massive interest in playing ice hockey where he considered playing professionally. Michael started his career journey when he played archaeologist Dr. Jackson in Stargate SG-1 throughout the first five seasons and left the show at the end of the fifth season. He cited creative differences in the concern underuse of his character and the direction of the show as a whole. Throughout the sixth season, he made several guest appearances though playing his own character and voiced the Asgard character, Thor.
He went back to play his previous role for the 7th and the subsequent season together.
