Franzese was born in New York City, New York, on May 27, 1951. He was the son of Combo crime family underboss John Sonny Franzese, and his mother was Christian Capobianco-Franzese. Later on, Michael moved to Long Island, and it eventually became home to most of his operations. He attained his high school education from Long Island, and later in 1961, he joined Hofstra University for a pre-med program.

He dropped out of college in 1971 in order to earn money for his family after his father was sentenced for 50 years for bank robbery. He became acquitted with his father’s friends and later was inducted as a made man in 1975. Michael became a caporegime of a crew of 300 in 1980.

Franzese organized Russian Mafia in Brooklyn, and they both became partners, and he ended up making a lot of money in selling gasoline.

By the mid-1980s, Franzese has several businesses in various fields like a car dealership, nightclubs, movie production, travel agencies, leasing companies, video stores, and auto repair shops. He partnered with Norby Walters, who was a booking agent, with the role of intimidating prospective clients as well as existing ones.

Franzese co-authored his first book called Quitting the Mob in 1992. In the book, he discussed his criminal activities, life with his father, among other personal issues. In the year 1994, Michael publicly denounced organized crime and became a motivational speaker. He has made speeches to schools, youths, and other venues over the years.
