Mayte Garcia was born on the 12th of November in 1973. She was born in Fort Rucker, Alabama, army base. Although she is an American by birth, her parents John and Janelle (simply known as Nelly) both are of Puerto Rican descent.
Mayte was brought up in both the United States and Germany alongside her sister Janice. Most of her summer holidays were spent with her extended family living in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Garcia attended General H.H. Arnold High School, which is located in Western Germany. She started belly dancing at a very young age. In 1981, she was featured on That’s Incredible at the age of 7 years old for being the youngest professional belly dancer.

At the age of 16 years old, she met Prince in Barcelona after Prince watched a tape of Garcia’s dancing. At the age of 17, she graduated from high school in Germany, and Prince became her legal guardian. Upon moving to Minneapolis, she was helped to settle in her own apartment by Prince and a member of his team.
Prince and Garcia started their sexual relationship when Garcia was just 19 years of age after she was instructed by Prince to get on birth control. They courted for four years and finally got married on 14th February in 1996. They welcomed their first child on 16th October in 1996, but unfortunately, he was suffering from Pfeiffer Syndrome type 2 and needed a ventilator to breathe. Six days after his birth, Amir passed away, which made the two get into depression and denial.
