Mary Lou Retton is the daughter of Ronnie Retton who used to work in a coal industry transportation equipment business. She was born in Fairmont, West Virginia in January 24, 1968.
She went to Fairmont Senior High School. However, she was not able to graduate as she competed in the Olympic Games during her sophomore year. As a child, Mary was inspired by Nadia Comaneci at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
It was then she decided to take gymnastics. Initially, she was coached by Gary Rafaloski. Soon she moved to Houston in Texas to receive coaching from Marta and Bela Karolyi.

With immense training and hard work, Mary Lou Retton won the American cup in 1983. The same year she also placed second at the US Nationals.
