They relocated to Sioux Falls in South Dakota when she was young and later to Denmark when she was a teenager. She can speak a number of languages fluently, including Danish and Swedish.

Hart attended Augustana Academy, which was a boarding school and graduated in 1968. She later attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, and she graduated in 1972. She wanted to leave journalism and was acting as a sales representative of the Yearbook Company and moved to Los Angeles in 1979.
