Margaret Theresa Bradley was born to Ophelia Birdie and Douglas Bradley at Cook County Hospital on 14 June 1931. She is the middle child of three sisters. Marla went to Wendell Phillips Academy High School, which was located in the Bronze Ville Neighbourhood on Chicago South Side. She graduated in 1949, and a few years later, she moved to Detroit, Michigan, and joined Peters Business School.  She secured a job as a reservations agent at United Airlines, and later on, she relocated to Los Angeles with her children.
