Lanier began his legal career in Houston, where he worked in the appellate and trial divisions of Fulbright &Jaworski(now Norton Rose Fulbright).  Lanier later established The Lanier Law Firm in 1990.

In a breach of contract and fraud case against Amoco in 1990, Lanier represented Rubicon Oil and Gas. Amoco had wrongfully pulled out of a contract to sell Wyoming oil fields to Rubicon, according to a jury in Matagorda County, Texas. The jury awarded $480 million in damages.

Lanier was the principal attorney for a group of steelworkers who contracted asbestos sickness at an Alabama steel factory in the Aaron v. Abex trial in 1998. The jury gave a $115 million verdict.

In 2005, Carol Ernst was represented by Lanier in a case against Merck & Co., the manufacturer of Vioxx, an anti-inflammatory medicine used to treat osteoarthritis and acute pain disorders. Robert Ernst (Carol Ernst’s husband), a former marathon runner died after taking the medicine. Initially, the case was decided in Ernst’s favour, with a jury paying her $253 million.

In another case, Lanier was successful in obtaining consumer fraud findings against Merck, which accused the company of deceiving doctors and patients by withholding information about Vioxx and its hazards. In 2008, the first ruling was overturned on appeal, with the court stating that Lanier “had not proven that Vioxx caused Mr. Ernst’s death.

Following the DePuy Hip Recall in 2010, Lanier represented plaintiffs in a number of cases filed against Johnson & Johnson and DePuySynthes, which Johnson & Johnson purchased in 1998. It was claimed that the implants caused a build-up of metal ions in the blood, resulting in groin pain, allergic reactions, bone degradation, and tissue death.

The verdict included total compensatory damages of $140 million and punitive damages of almost $360 million. The jury found that the implants were defectively built and that the businesses neglected to notify the public about the dangers they posed.

Lanier led the trial team for 22 women who had filed a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson in 2018. The complaint claimed that the company’s talcum powder products contained asbestos, which had caused each of the women’s ovarian cancer after several years of use. The trial lasted six weeks, and the plaintiffs were granted $550 million in compensatory damages and $4.14 billion in punitive damages.

The Lanier Law Firm was proud to represent a class of over 1,000 Oklahoma natural gas well royalty owners. This was after they claimed that BP underpaid royalties by deducting processing charges and post-production midstream services. In October 2018, a $221 Million settlement was agreed upon.
