Mark Freuder Knopfler was born to an English mother, Louisa Mary, and a Hungarian émigré father, Erwin Knopfler, in Glasgow, Scotland, on 12th August 1949. The Knopfler family later moved to Blyth in North East England, where he and his brother, David, attended Gosforth Grammar School.
