In 1969, Mahmoud Abdul Rauf was born as Chris Jackson, to a poverty-stricken single-parent family comprising of his mother, Jacqueline Jackson and his two brothers, Omar Jackson, and David Jackson. Abdul has spent most of his early years in a place called Gulfport, Mississippi. At the age of 17, he was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, a nervous system disorder involving involuntary repetitive movements and sounds.
He graduated from Gulfport High School and then enrolled in the Louisiana State University. There he was fortunate to get a chance to play organized basketball. He played his first match against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs basketball team, also known as Dunkin’ Dawgs.
Abdul Rauf is married to his longtime girlfriend, Kim Jackson, and has fathered five children. He got converted into a Sunni Muslim in the year 1991 and got his name Chris Jackson changed to Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf.
