Born a Gemini on 12 June 1977, Lil Duval was raised in Jacksonville, Florida. He is so attached to his native land that when he decided to become a performer, he took the stage name “Lil Duval”, dedicated to his birthplace, Duval County, Florida. He studied at the First Coast High School from where he graduated. Later he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. It was after relocating that Duval started formally pursuing comedy and finally got his breakthrough. Duval is of African American descent but also has Bahamian lineage from his grandfather’s side.

Once Lil Duval moved to Atlanta he started working in the comedy circles, performing as a stand-up comedian. He became a regular at the Atlanta staple, Uptown Comedy Corner, a stint that made him quite popular. In 2001 he performed at the Oakland Bay Area Competition and was encouraged to do so by Cedric Entertainer’s road manager. The performance was quite a hit, so he was again invited to perform on the Budweiser tour featuring Cedric and four new comedians. Cedric realized Duval was a natural and asked him to participate in the television special Cedric the Entertainer: Starting Lineup.
In 2005 he took part and was a finalist on BET’s comedy competition series Coming to the Stage. It featured Trae Tha Truth. After gaining some popularity as a comedian, he became a series regular on MTV2 shows Guy Code and Hip Hop Squares. From 2013 to 2014 he also hosted the video show Ain’t That America on MTV2. He released his first solo single and music video on 1 April 2014 called “Wat Dat Mouf Do”. “Smile Bitch (Living My Best Life)” featuring Snoop Dogg and Ball Greezy was released in 2018.
Powell also starred in Clean Up Man (2005), Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming (2010), Highway (2012), Scary Movie 5 (2013), School Dance (2014), Meet the Blacks (2016), Grow House (2017), The Trap (2019).
