Alexander began his professional life as an attorney. He was a member of the California State Bar from 1978 until 2009. His first employment was trading options and bonds for Lawrence Kotkin Associates, a Wall Street business. He departed in 1980 to start his own investing firm, The Alexander Group. In addition, he owns 18.5% of First Marblehead, a private student lending organization.

Alexander purchased the Houston Rockets for $85 million in July 1993, just before the start of the NBA season. The Rockets won the NBA title the next two seasons, one in ’93-94 and the other in ’94-95. He was named the top owner in the NBA by Forbes magazine in 2008.

Alexander sought to buy and move the Edmonton Oilers franchise in the National Hockey League in 1998, but a grassroots push by local businesspeople successfully blocked the acquisition.
