Majors was born in Wyandotte, Michigan, U.S.A on 23 April 1939. His father was a manual laborer who died in the job before he was born. His mother, Alice Yeary, passed away in an accident before his second birthday.

He was lucky enough to get adopted by his uncle and aunt and then shifted to Middlesboro, Kentucky.

He wanted to become a football coach and participated in Middlesboro High School. He graduated in the year 1957 and received a scholarship to Indiana University, where he continued playing football.

He finished his graduation from Eastern Kentucky in the year 1962 with a degree in History and Physical Education. He earned a doctorate from the local university in 2006.
After college, he moved to Los Angeles and started working at the Los Angeles Park and Recreation Department, where he met Dick Clayton. He suggested Majors attend acting school and start his career. Majors also went to Estelle Harman’s acting school at MGM.
