Larry Holmes was born on November 3, 1949, in Cuthbert, Georgia. His father, John Holmes, was a Gardner, and mother Flossie took care of their family of 12 children, including Larry Holmes. In 1954 the family moved to Easton, Pennsylvania. The family survived on welfare.
