Kyle Long was born in Ivy, Virginia on the 5th of December, 1988. He went to St. Anne’s-Belfield School in Charlottesville, Virginia and played both baseball and football. He was actually selected to the 2008 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

In 2008, he was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 23rd round of the MLB draft. However, he decided not to sign and honour his deal with Florida State University.

Career

In 2010, Long enrolled at the Saddleback College after leaving Florida State University for academic reasons. During his first year in the college, he played as a defensive tackle where he recorded 16 tackles and one quarterback sack.

He switched to the offensive line in 2011 and in December of that year, he committed to play for the Oregon Ducks football team. He transferred to the University of Oregon where he played in the offensive line.

Long was picked by the Chicago Bears as the 20th overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft. He signed on May 17th of that year and was the last member of the 2013 Chicago’s draft class to do so. He attended a rookie minicamp from May 10th-12th but missed much of the offseason program.

He started in the Bears’ first game in the 2013 season against the Cincinnati Bengals at right guard, becoming the first rookie in team history to do so.

At the start of the 2015 season, Long changed his playing position from guard to tackle and started all regular season games in 2015. On March 10th, 2016, the Bears signed Bobby Massie, a right tackle, which meant Long went back to playing guard. In September, 2016, Long signed a shocking $40 Million contract extension with the Bears through 2021.

Long suffered a number of injuries during the 2016 season, where he played the first 7 games of the season with a torn labrum on his left shoulder. He missed a game with the Minnesota Vikings due to strained triceps and then suffered an ankle injury when playing against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

On January 6th, 2020, Long announced his retirement from the sport, and was an unrestricted free agent on March 18th, 2020. On the same day one year later(March 18th, 2021), Long signed with the Kansas City Chiefs after deciding to come out of retirement. Unfortunately, he injured his knee in June of the same year which put him out for a long time.
