Early Life & Biography

Kirk Dewayne Franklin had a rough childhood being abandoned by his mother and being raised by his aunt, Gertrude. But his aunt learnt early that he had an ear for music, and so did base jobs like recycling aluminum cans to raise money for his piano lessons even before he turned five. By seven, Kirk was already getting offers and contracts for his music, but his aunt insisted on his being involved with the church choir.

So, at the age of eleven, he became music director of the Mt. Rose Baptist Church adult choir. But with his newfound fame came some reckless actions and he became father to a child at the age of fifteen.  This incident drifted him from his commitment to the church and resulted in behavioral changes that resulted in expulsion from school as well. It took him a couple of years and the horrific killing of a friend to bring him back to church and choir singing.

Kirk co-founded a gospel group, The Humble Hearts, which recorded one of Franklin’s compositions and got the attention of gospel music legend Milton Bingham, musical director of the Georgia Mass Choir and recruited him as the lead for the DFW Mass Choir in a recording of Franklin’s song “Every Day with Jesus.” Later Kirk became the leader of the 1990 Gospel Music Workshop of America Convention.

In 1992, Franklin organized “The Family,” which was a seventeen-voice choir consisting of neighborhood friends and associates. The same year, Vicki Mack-Lataillade, the co-founder of fledgling record label GospoCentric, signed up Kirk & The Family for a recording contract. The group released their first album in 1993, by the same name. In 1995 the group released Kirk Franklin & the Family Christmas.

A year later, the group released Whatcha Lookin’4. Franklin’s song Joy was recorded by Whitney Houston and the Georgia Mass Choir. Unfortunately, in the late ’90s, there was a lawsuit filed against Franklin by God’s Property founder Linda. 1998 marked the release of the Nu Nation Project, which later went on to top the Billboard Contemporary Christian Albums chart for 23 weeks and the Billboard Gospel Albums chart for 49 weeks. But in 2000, members of The Family filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Franklin and GospoCentric Records for depriving them of their royalties for the Nu Nation Project.
