King was born on 14 June 1956 as Kim Bendix Petersen in Copenhagen, Denmark. King started with a young band named Brainstorm, which lasted for only two years. He incorporated Jeanette Blum, the vocalist and Michael Frohn, who was on the guitar. After two years, Diamond quit the brainstorm band and joined the Danish hard rock band to sing locally. At the band, he tried out shaping a malevolent quasi-satanic stage persona.

After a short while with the local band, King joined the punk-metal band Brats and met with Hank Sherman, who later helped Michael Denner with his project. The musicians joined together to form the Mercyful fate band later.
