Born on February 5, 1986, as Kevin Jerome Gilyard in Louisiana, Kevin had a very rough childhood having been arrested at the age of thirteen.

He attended Baton Rouge Community College but dropped out soon after.

In 2015, he kicked a fan while performing on stage. The fan pressed charges against him, and he was convicted of this charge. He is now serving a 30-month jail term which will end in 2018.

Gates, who is of African American and Puerto Rican descent converted to Islam along with his wife Dreka Haynes, in 2016. They have two children together, Islah and Kazha.
