Kenneth Irvine Chenault was born on June 2, 1951, in Mineola, New York, the U.S., to his parents Hortenius Chenault and Anne Chenault. His father was a dentist and dental hygienist who graduated from Morehouse College and Howard University Dental School. His father passed the New York State dental exam with the highest score ever recorded, which was not broken till 2014.
Chenault completed his schooling from the Waldorf School of Garden City, where he was the class president. Later, he attended Bowdoin College, where he earned his B.A. in history in 1973. He also completed his Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School in 1976.
Chenault married his wife Kathryn Chenault in 1977. Together they are the parents of two children, Kevin Chenault, and Kenneth Jr. Chenault. He is a member of the Westchester Country Club and Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.
