Thurman started his amateur boxing career in 1997 and went on winning six national championships, including PAL National Championship with 101 victories. He was defeated by the boxer Demetrius Andrade in the Olympic trials and won a silver medal.

On July 27, 2013, Keith challenged Diego Gabriel Chaves for the WBA interim welterweight championship. He defeated Chaves in the 10th round with a KO winning the championship belt. In October 2013, Keith defended his title against Jesus Soto Karass, putting him down to the floor in the ninth round and winning the match. On March 25, 2014, ESPN announced that Keith would defend his title against IBF lightweight champion Julio Diaz. He defeated Diaz and went ahead, defending his title against undefeated Italian boxer Leonard Bundu. He defeated Bundu and successfully defended his title.
On January 14, 2015, Keith faced WBA welterweight champion Robert Guerrero in a title match. He defeated Guerrero with a KO becoming the new WBA welterweight champion.
