Huntsman was born in Redwood City, California. His mother Karen Huntsman was a daughter to LDS Church apostle David B. Haight and his father, Jon Huntsman Sr. the founder of the Huntsman Corporation as a business executive which manufactured generic Styrofoam cartons for McDonalds and other fast-food companies and was one of the largest petrochemical companies in the United States which made him a billionaire. He has eight brothers and sisters.

He attended Highland High School in Salt Lake City but decided to drop out before even graduating from performing as a Keyboard player in a rock band. He enrolled at the University of Utah, where he became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
