His father was also a golfer while his mother worked as a model. He loved golf since he was young and won his first title when he was at the age of 16 when he was playing for the Olympic Club for the junior team.
Miller attended Abraham Lincoln High School. He later went to Brigham Young University in Provo in 1966, whereas a freshman he joined the Olympic club of U.S. Open. He graduated with a degree in Physical Education in 1969.
