Early Life
Born on May 22, 1966, in Washington D.C., Gill is one of four sons of Johnny Gill Sr and Anni Mae Gill. He began singing at the tender age of five in the Church. The group in which he sang included his own brothers, Randy, Jeff and Bobby Gill.
At different times, Gill attended Kimball Elementary, Sousa Junior High, and Duke Ellington School of the Arts. He chose his music career over a college education.

When he was 16, his friend Stacy Lattisaw made him record a demo which was heard by the President of Atlantic Records. His first album was released by Cotillion Records. He and Stacy released Perfect Combination together. Gill’s second solo album Chemistry was released in 1985.
Michael Bivins recruited Gill to New Edition in 1987. With Gill’s induction into the band, they produced hit singles like “N.E. Heartbreak”, “Boys To Men”, “Can You Stand The Rain” and “If It Isn’t Love”.
Gill released a second album in 1990 which contained hits like “Wrap My Body Tight”, “My, My, My”, “Fairweather Friend” and “Rub You the Right Way”.
1993 saw the release of another of his solo projects titled Provocative which contained hit singles like “A Cute, Sweet, Love Addiction”, “Quiet Time to Play”, “I Know Where I Stand”.
In 1996 he released Let’s Get the Mood Right, which contained one of his most popular songs “Maybe”.
He reunited with New Edition once again in the same year, and they produced the album Home Again.
In 1997, he united with Keith Sweat and Gerald Levert to create the group LSG which ended up producing a multi-platinum debut album titled Levert.Sweat.Gill.
They produced their final album LSG2 in 2003.
The year 2004 saw the reunion of New Edition, and they released the album, One Love.
Gill went back to his solo career with songs like “In The Mood” and “2nd Place”. In 2014 he decided to create his own label, J Skillz Records and produced his album, Game Changer. The album contains several R, and B hits like “Behind Closed Doors” and the title track itself.
