John Levell Starks (a.k.a. John Starks) is a former professional basketball player from the American National Basketball Association. Early Life & Biography

Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Starks attended Tulsa Central High School. Starks played basketball for only one year at Tulsa Central. Later on, he attended Rogers State College in 1984, where Starks was a part of the “taxi squad” of the basketball team, where he was one of the backups to replace injured or suspended players.

His time at the college came to an abrupt end when he was expelled from Rogers State on account of theft of a student’s stereo in retaliation for the altercation with a student who broke into Starks’ dorm room, for which he and his roommates have levied charges for the damage by the college.

After this incident, he was transferred to Northern Oklahoma College and joined the basketball team there. He was sentenced to five days in jail for the robbery, which he served during his spring break. Having committed another felony of possession and use of an illegal substance (cannabis), Starks was let go from the institution.

While going through these ups and downs, Starks had a partner in his wife, Jackie. The two got married on December 13, 1986. They soon became parents to one son and two daughters, namely John Starks Jr., Chelsea Starks, Tiara Starks.

Career

In his career, Starks played with six teams in 3 different leagues. Starting with the Golden State Warriors, he then went on to play in the Continental Basketball Association, playing for the Cedar Rapids Silver Bullets from 1989–90 and World Basketball League with the Memphis Rockers during 1990–91.

Starks came back to the NBA with a little stroke of good luck to his name with the New York Knicks. A mishap occurred during one practice session where he tried to dunk on Nick’s center Patrick Ewing. Starks suffered an injury to his knee that got twisted as Ewing brought him down.

Under the contract, unless he was healed by the end of December, the team couldn’t trade him. And so it happened. He wasn’t able to recover by that time; therefore, the Knicks could not release him. This instance gave Starks a chance, and he has referred to Ewing as his saving grace.

Within time he became the starting shooting guard, a key player on the team, and played eight seasons in New York from 1990 to 1998. along with teammates Anthony Mason and Charles Oakley.

One of the most famous plays in Knicks history, “The Dunk”, was administered by Starks against the Chicago Bulls, where he dunked over Horace Grant.

His time with the Knicks came to an end in 1998. He was then traded back to his original team, in 1999, the Golden State Warriors, where he remained for almost a year and got traded to the Chicago Bulls in the following year, where his stint lasted only four games in 1999-2000 season.

After playing with the Utah Jazz from 2000-2002, Starks retired from his career after failing to make it an NBA team.

At present, Starks works for the Knicks as an alumnus and fan development official. He also provides his services as a game analyst. He published his autobiography in 2004, John Starks: My Life.
