John Michael Montgomery was born on 20th January 1965 in Danville, Kentucky, in the United States. His parents were Harold Edward Montgomery and Carol Dean. He had an elder brother Eddie Montgomery. His parents later divorced, and his father was his mentor since he was young as he used to perform in a local country band. He taught him various musical chords as he was growing up. His father died in 1994. This made him join his brother Eddie in the family band, where he was the guitarist and later the lead singer. Montgomery has not disclosed his educational background.
