John was born on 31 January 1956 in London to parents Eileen Lydia and john Christopher Lydon. His parents were working-class and had moved from Ireland to an apartment in North London in search of better opportunities. Being the eldest of the four brothers, John had to take care of his younger siblings as his mother fell ill quite frequently. While John spent some time at his mother’s native County Cork, he there faced discrimination for having an English accent even though he traveled under an Irish passport. John described himself to be “very shy” at school and hating it for having several embarrassing encounters there and would often get caned as a form of punishment.

At the age of seven, he was diagnosed with spinal meningitis and spent a year attending to his treatments. Since his father was away due to work for the majority of the time, John had to do small jobs to help his family out in times of financial difficulties. He was expelled from school at the age of 15. He then went to Hackney College and met John Simon Ritchie.

John Lydon got married to Nora Forster, an heiress from Germany in the year 1979. He then became the stepfather of Nora’s daughter Ari Up, who was the lead vocalist for the post-punk band the Slits. In 2000, Lydon and Nora had become the legal guardians of Ari’s twin sons.

He stated that the boys were not attended to correctly, and their state is so bad that they could neither read nor write appropriate sentences. Unfortunately, in 2010, Ari passed away. Lydon and Nora then became the guardians for Ari’s third child Wilton. Lydon and his family mostly resided in California, Venice, and London. In 2018 it was revealed that Nora was in the mid-stages of her Alzheimer’s.

Lydon was one of the few who frequently went out with Malcom McLaren and Vivienne Westwood at their fetish clothing shop. McLaren was promoting a new band formed by Steve Jones while he came across Lydon. Impressed by his shabby look, sense of style, and his orange hair, Lydon was chosen to be the band’s lead singer. In the year 1977, the band released “God Save the Queen” during Queen Elizabeth II’s silver jubilee.

Lydon was interested in dub music and looked up to progressive experimentalists like Magma while the tensions between John and the band’s bassist Glen kept growing. After Glen quit, John asked his friend Richie to replace him, although he was entirely under qualified to be a part of the band. Richie used the stage name Sid Vicious which John had given him. Richie’s relationship with his girlfriend Nancy was chaotic enough to worsen his heroin addiction and tension among the members. In January 1978, at a concert in San Francisco, The Sid-Vicious phase for the Sex Pistols came to an end.

In the same year, Lydon formed the group Public Image Ltd(PiL). Bassist Wobble yet left, and Lydon and Levene continued to create The Flowers of Romance(1981). Their album This is What You Want. This is What You Get(1984) had the song “This Is Not A Love Song,” which got featured on   No. 5 in UK’s Singles Chart in 1983.

In 1983, he starred alongside Harvey Keitel in the film Cop killer and also played a small role in the film The Independent released in 2000.
