Born John Bernard Larroquette on 25 November 1947, in New Orleans, Louisiana, his father John Edgar Larroquette Jr. worked at the United States Navy. His mother, Berthalla Oramous Helmstetter, was a clerk at a departmental store. His paternal grandfather was an immigrant from France, and he got to the United States in 1895.
